Interpretation

Cholesterol is rarely measured in body fluids.  One exception is that cholesterol may be measured in pleural fluid in order to differentiate between a chylothorax (elevated triglycerides, relatively normal cholesterol) and a pseudochylothorax (elevated cholesterol, relatively normal triglycerides).

Please note that the cholesterol assay has not been validated for measurement on body fluid specimens. Results must be interpreted with caution.
